چکیده

Since Robert Gross inaugurated pediatric cardiac surgery in 1938 and since the advent of open-heart surgery on cardiopulmonary bypass in the 1950s, mortality from congenital heart disease has plummeted. However, many of the more complex forms of congenital heart disease still cannot be physiologically corrected; rather, patients are surgically palliated, permitting survival but leaving significant residual cardiac pressure and volume loads. Over time, these patients are at risk for heart failure, and some ultimately require heart transplantation. A major biological factor that constrains treatment options for congenital heart disease patients, as well as adults with acquired heart disease, is the limited ability of mature mammalian cardiomyocytes to proliferate. Cardiac regeneration therapy: connections to cardiac physiology.

Without heart transplantation, a large number of patients with failing hearts worldwide face poor outcomes. By means of cardiomyocyte regeneration, cardiac regeneration therapy is emerging with great promise as a means for restoring loss of cardiac function. However, the limited success of clinical trials using bone marrow-derived cells and myoblasts with heterogeneous constituents, transplante...

Heart Regeneration with Embryonic Cardiac Progenitor Cells and Cardiac Tissue Engineering.

Myocardial infarction (MI) is the leading cause of death worldwide. Recent advances in stem cell research hold great potential for heart tissue regeneration through stem cell-based therapy. While multiple cell types have been transplanted into MI heart in preclinical studies or clinical trials, reduction of scar tissue and restoration of cardiac function have been modest. Several challenges ham...

Adult c-kitpos Cardiac Stem Cells Are Necessary and Sufficient for Functional Cardiac Regeneration and Repair

The epidemic of heart failure has stimulated interest in understanding cardiac regeneration. Evidence has been reported supporting regeneration via transplantation of multiple cell types, as well as replication of postmitotic cardiomyocytes. In addition, the adult myocardium harbors endogenous c-kit(pos) cardiac stem cells (eCSCs), whose relevance for regeneration is controversial. Here, using ...

Plants and their bioactive compounds with the potential to enhance mechanisms of inherited cardiac regeneration.

This article reviews the current progress and research indications in the application of natural plant compounds with the potential for the treatment of cardiovascular diseases. Our understanding of how to apply natural plant compounds to enhance mechanisms of inherited cardiac regeneration, which is physiologically pertinent to myocyte turnover or minor cardiac repair, for substantial cardiac ...

Regeneration of the heart

The death of cardiac myocytes diminishes the heart's pump function and is a major cause of heart failure, one of the dominant causes of death worldwide. Other than transplantation, there are no therapies that directly address the loss of cardiac myocytes, which explains the current excitement in cardiac regeneration. The field is evolving in two important directions. First, although endogenous ...
